THOUSANDS are without running water in parts of Sedgemoor following a water main burst earlier today.

Burnham, Highbridge, Mark, East Brent, Brent Knoll and Lympsham have all been hit by low pressure and a lack of water supply since this morning, due to the burst main on the A38 Bridgewater Road, between the M5 bridge and East Brent roundabout.

Bottled water is being handed out in the car park of Tesco Superstore in Ben Travers Way, Burnham, while Bristol Water engineers attempt to repair the main.

A statement from Bristol Water this afternoon said: “We are currently enlarging the area where the burst took place to gives us the space to do the replacement. The pipe is around 2.6 metres deep at this point.

“We cannot give a completion time for this work at this point or a time for when supplies will be restored, we believe it will certainly take the rest of today.”

Burnham resident Mike Lang said: “There are huge queues at the supermarket to get water from the car park, and inside the store it is going off the shelves like hot cakes.”
