UP to 300 staff who work for one of Nailsea's biggest employers could be looking for new jobs come the end of the month.Workers at GfK NOP, on High Street, have just been told that bosses are considering closing the market research call centre. All but four of the company's employees, who number between 250 and 300, are casual workers who would not be entitled to redundancy payments. But the firm said that all of the staff at its Nailsea base were involved in consultations with personnel officers about the proposal to close the telephone interviewing centre. By the end of the month, the workers should know their fate.Phyllis Macfarlane, managing director of GfK NOP, said: "For several years now, we have seen a trend in market research towards on-line data collection and away from telephone interviewing."We are deeply sorry that we are having to consider closing the Nailsea centre, but we have to structure our business to meet our clients' requirements."The business traded as Martin Hamblin until it was sold to a German firm, GfK.Last year, GfK merged with NOP which led to the firm being renamed GfK NOP.
