PORTISHEAD'S Local Action Team (LAT) may have to fold because of a lack of funds. The group had applied to Portishead and North Weston Town Council for a £400 grant, but were only given £100 by councillors. The news has come as a massive blow to LAT bosses who say the group will not be able to continue without funds in the bank.LAT chairman Geraldine Box said: "I have already incurred expenses for travelling and use of my computer and my phone. A grant of £100 will no way cover the costs of the LAT for a year and without any money, we cannot go on."I am senior citizen and am on a limited income and there is no way I can afford to fund the work of the LAT. We have all worked very hard on the LAT and it would be a real shame if it does fold."Mrs Box, who has been chairman of the LAT for nearly a year, says the group, which normally meets at the Folk Hall, occasionally has to pay for venues to meet in.The LAT has had a chequered past and started up again last year after laying dormant for several months because of difficulty recruiting new members. It now has representatives on it from the local community, police, council and schools.Portishead and North Weston Town Council chairman Dennis Miers said although the funding had been agreed at £100, the council would look at supporting any campaigns the LAT planned to run.Councillor Miers said: "We did not feel it was necessary to earmark the money to the LAT just for expenses."The town council has supported the LAT in the past and given funding towards running costs and specific items."However, if the LAT wanted funding for a particular project, then the town council would be happy to look at that again.
