A MEMORIAL garden for Jill Dando will be spruced up by green-fingered volunteers on Saturday.

Pete McAleer, of Weston, is calling on residents to grab a trowel and help revitalise the Grove Park attraction.

The 59-year-old, of Florence Grove, Weston, said: “It is exactly 10 years ago that the BBC’s Ground Force team, led by Alan Titchmarsh, created the small but beautiful sanctuary we know as Jill’s Garden, which was dedicated to Weston’s favourite daughter.

“This year also commemorates Jill’s 50th birthday and we should not let this moment pass.

“As a mark of respect some people, who appreciate Jill’s contribution to Weston, will be gathering at noon on Saturday to help improve its appearance.”

Jill, who was born in Weston and worked at the Weston Mercury, died in 1999 after being shot outside her London home.

The BBC television show’s Ground Force team created a colourful garden, complete with fountain, in 2001.
