TOWN councillors have agreed to stop holding committee meetings over a drink at their local pub.Licensees at The Crown Inn, Axbridge, joked that councillors who held their monthly committee meetings there should be banned after a row broke out over whether the pub should be allowed to display a sign in the street.Unsure over whether they would be welcome in the watering hole for their tourism and promotions meeting in September, councillors decided they would hold it elsewhere. At a meeting at the Town Hall this week, they took the decision one step further and agreed it was inappropriate to hold meetings at any of the town's pubs.Normally the committees meet in different pubs on a rota basis, but councillors will no longer now be able to have a tipple while discussing town matters.Councillor Jim Lukins said: "I think it is totally inappropriate to meet in the pub, why can't we hold them in the Town Hall?"Although the next meeting of the council's Axbridge promotion advisory committee will still be held at The Crown, the authority will finalise its new meeting policy at the next meeting of the personnel committee. The dispute over the pub sign remains unresolved.
