RESIDENTS in Burnham, Brent Knoll, Mark and Berrow will not be caught short when they are out and about this summer. At a special meeting of Sedgemoor District Council's policy review and service improvement committee this week, members said they want two toilets in Burnham to remain open, one to close and one to re-open. They also think the conveniences in Brent Knoll and Mark should stay open until March 2007 and the toilet in Berrow should remain open indefinitely. In Burnham, it was feared the toilets at the headquarters of the Burnham Area Rescue Boat (BARB), could close along with ones in Seaview Road and at the yacht club. But after discussing a review carried out by a working group set up to assess facilities across Sedgemoor, it was decided the only toilet that should close should be the one at the BARB building and that a redundant toilet at Crosses Pen should be re-opened. Representatives from Burnham & Highbridge Town Council were at the meeting to express their concern over the loss of the loos in what they feel is a main area for tourists. The head of tourism, culture and marketing at Sedgemoor District Council had also expressed concern over the closure of some of the facilities. In his report he said: "We are concerned that there are no alternatives at the northern end of the Esplanade. "In theory we would prefer those to be kept open rather than the yacht club ones if a closure is essential."The committee's recommendations will be considered at a meeting of the council's executive on June 14.
