PARENTS and teaching staff are annoyed after children were given the afternoon off from a Weston school because of the heatwave.Pupils from Wyvern Community School were allowed to go home at 12.40pm on July 19.Wyvern was the only school in Weston to finish early and it was the first time it has happened due to hot weather.Teachers at neighbouring schools said Wyvern pupils texted their students - sparking calls for them to go home early as well.Councillor Ian Parker said some parents were worried where their children were on Wednesday. He said: "Parents felt wrong-footed and had to come back from work to look after their children."The decision to release the pupils from lessons just took everyone by surprise."Wyvern headteacher Andy Russell said: "The decision was made the evening before as the temperatures were pushing 100¡F in some of the classrooms."Staff and students were suffering and not working in a productive way."I spoke to people from other schools and the chairman of governors before the decision was made."A similar thing happened when we remained open during snowy weather. Other schools closed and their students texted ours.
