WESTON East Ward councillor Richard Tucker has been elected as leader of North Somerset's increased Labour group.

Richard won his seat last week alongside new Locking Castle councillor Catherine Gibbons, in two surprise gains for Labour in East Ward.

The Coronation estate’s South Ward councillor, Debbie Stone, will be the group’s deputy leader.

As well as taking five seats on the district council, Labour is now the second largest party on Weston Town Council, with eight seats.

Councillor Tucker said: “It is a great honour to become leader and I hope to do my best for our local party, our voters and for Weston and North Somerset as a whole.

“We will also stand up to defend vital frontline services against the impact of Government cuts and the terrible funding settlement it has given North Somerset.”
