OVER 350 people have now signed a petition backing a campaign against a proposal to build a caravan park between Draycott and Cheddar. Villagers who formed the action group Save Open Land In Draycott (SOLID) invited people to sign their petition at Draycott Post Office and on their website, www.SOLID2007.comThe group is protesting against a planning application by Wells resident Michael Pearce to build a caravan park on a 13 acre plot at Nylands Crossroads. SOLID spokeswoman Sue Wall said: "The land is located at the very boundary of the Mendip Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). "The proposal will, if allowed to proceed, cause a scar upon the landscape and destroy the visual impact of the view from the Mendips across to Nyland Hill. It could cause more congestion in Cheddar and Draycott as visitors drive through the villages to reach the site."We are also concerned that people who stay there will walk along the A371, which is a busy and, in some places, narrow main road back into Cheddar. We feel the potential for accidents is huge."Along with the general caravan site development, the applicant wants to build a toilet and washing block, and alter access to the site, which is within the parish of Cheddar, where there is currently a local produce stall. The proposal looks set to go to Sedgemoor District Council's planning committee for a decision on April 17. Mr Pearce refused to comment.
