COMMUNITY crimefighters want to set up a drinking ban in a Somerset town to curb antisocial behaviour.Axbridge Action Group is concerned at the number of people drinking alcohol in the town and causing trouble because they are bored and is coming up with ways to combat the problem.During the summer, youngsters gathered in areas like The Square and the Furlong leaving behind broken bottles and a trail of destruction. The group is looking at placing a ban on the consumption of alcohol in these areas and the police have backed the idea.Beat officer PC Stuart Bullett said: "A survey could be done to see if the community agrees with the idea of a drinking ban. We will work with the action group if it decides to enforce it as I know the police see it as a good idea."If it goes ahead it will mean police officers will be able to move people who are drinking onto somewhere else.Action group worker Annabel Hackney said: "We cannot just assume it's under-age drinking that's causing the problems. We shouldn't alienate older people but it is something we will discuss with the council. We also need to get everyone interested in community projects and activities so people don't get bored."The group said the Crime Reduction in Somerset (CRIS) initiative, which allowed teenagers to get involved in community projects, was a massive success and helped reduce antisocial behaviour.Group chairman, Peter Harding, said: "Getting people involved in the community is definitely something we are looking at. If the community see a drinking ban as a good idea then we will discuss it further with the town council and the police.
