WESTON has a new mayor. Cllr David Hitchins was handed the honour at the annual mayor-making ceremony in the Old Council Chamber of the town hall.

The mayoress will be Carol Hitchins.

During the ceremony, retiring mayor Cyril King presented the Mayor’s Award to Lyn Lovell, Chantelle Williams and Peter Elmont for their inspirational and dedicated work in the local community.

In his closing speech Cllr King spoke of the huge honour and privilege it had been for he and his wife to have served over the past year.

In his acceptance speech Cllr Hitchins thanked the town councillors for their support and confidence in electing him as mayor and said that he would serve as the first citizen of the town with ‘dignity and integrity’.

The deputy mayor and mayoress will be Keith Morris and Jocelyn Holder.

A celebration dinner, attended by 110 guests, was held at Weston College.
