NAILSEA could soon have its own motto, describing how residents see their town now, and what kind of place they would like it to be.At a recent meeting, members of Nailsea's local action team (LAT) discussed the possibility of having a town charter, embodying values the community cherishes, which individuals would endeavour to live by.PC Roger Watts expressed reservations about whether residents would help to devise the document or take much notice of it and added: "If all the schools in the town took it on, that would be a good basis to work from."The idea is sound, but to get people to embrace it is a huge task."Cllr Rod Lees agreed that the concept was good, but added: "I feel it's chasing a bit of a dream."But Cllr Clare Hunt revived the debate when she mentioned that at the school where she works, every year each new class comes up with a slogan.Cllr Lees said having a motto would 'give Nailsea an identity' and Cllr Hunt suggested that schoolchildren could be involved in creating one.She also suggested an event and competition could be held and added: "It's not impossible for people to start feeling they belong to a place."The first step would be coming up with a motto or slogan to set the flavour of how residents feel about Nailsea and what they would like it to be and the values that flow from it."Cllr Lees said: "Starting with the schools might then encourage parents to get involved."It would encourage pride in our town."PC Watts said: "If we can catch children at school, when they grow up they'll still be living it."The LAT is setting up a working party to examine the idea more closely.
