WESTON people need reassurance that a 21million scheme to end commuter chaos and motorway misery will go ahead despite spending cuts, the town’s MP says.

John Penrose claims there is still a strong case for improving junction 21 of the M5 and expanding Worle railway station.

But uncertainty has surrounded the project since the change of Government and the Conservative member has written to the Transport Minister responsible, Mike Penning, to ask for clarification.

Mr Penrose said: “The chaos and misery faced by thousands of people at Junction 21 every day persists and the scheme seems to be the answer we’ve all been looking for.

“We all know that money is very tight, but I believe it’s a strong case.”

In his letter, Mr Penrose describes the measures, known as the Weston Transport Package, as crucial to the town’s economic and transport future.

Weston figures have for years asked for cash to solve the problem of traffic queues and their pleas were answered in March when transport minister Paul Clark pledged support for the package after months of delays.

But the coalition Government’s spending cuts threw into doubt many projects promised by the previous Government.

The start of work to create motorway management schemes for junctions 19 and 20 of the M4 and junctions 15-17 of the M5 has been postponed.
