MOURNERS in Burnham and Highbridge may soon have to bury their loved ones in a nearby village because the graveyards in their towns are running out of space.Burnham town councillor Arthur Thorogood announced at the annual meeting for Burnham and Highbridge this month that the cemetery in Burnham Road, Highbridge, and the one in Westfield Road, Burnham, are nearly full. After the meeting Councillor Thorogood, who is also a member of Burnham Joint Burial Committee, said: "The two cemeteries are running out of space."Eventually people will have to go to Brent Road cemetery on Berrow Triangle. But people are aware that this is going to happen."Although the Brent Road cemetery is in Berrow the land belongs to Burnham and Highbridge town council and Burnham Without parish council. Burnham town council clerk, Eileen Shaw, said: "I can confirm that the Burnham cemetery is full now except for four reserved plots. "But the one in Burnham Road in Highbridge has as many as 35 plots left for burials. We anticipate that at the current rate of use there won't be a problem for two years there."The burial of ashes will not be too much of a problem for a number of years."The joint burial committee was aware of the problem of lack of space and that is why they opened the Brent Road cemetery for residents of Burnham and Highbridge.
