THE Weston & Somerset Mercury has been given an exclusive first look through the doors of the town's first university campus.Weston College's new £15million site in Loxton Road is set to open its doors to more than 800 students for the first time next month and reporter Charlotte Richardson was one of the first to see what is on offer. The University Campus will offer degree level courses in association with other further education centres in the South West and will also house the college's art and design and music departments. Some of the foundation degree subjects on offer will include broadcast media, graphic design, music production, popular music and applied arts.In each music room there are up to 15 brand new Mac computers as well as a mesmerising array of instruments.Workers are currently putting the finishing touches to the electrical wiring in the numerous recording studios and the music wing. Along the corridor there is also a performance room ideal for events. The main refectory is already kitted out with tables and chairs and all it needs now is the food and some hungry students. The art wing has a very personal feel to it. Each class will have a dedicated group room where they can leave their work behind each day and display their masterpieces on the walls. There are also designated workshops for different types of materials including wood, ceramics and textiles. One room is already kitted out with new kilns ready to be fired up.The site also has its own sixth form centre with seminar rooms, computer suites and science laboratories and is linked to two others by a spectacular glass covered bridge overlooking the front of the site. The campus library is waiting to be filled with hundreds of books and DVDs and there is also a quiet study room and yet another computer suite next door.Outside there are vast grounds at the back which students can use for sports or recreational purposes and there are parking spaces for about 80 vehicles. The development is stylish, modern, spacious and know only requires the hundreds of students who will be walking through the doors in just a few weeks.
