PEDDLERS could be banned from Weston's streets if plans to create a new law get the town's backing.Traders who sell novelty toys like whistles and balloons would be banned from certain streets or the entire district unless they were approved by North Somerset Council.Carnival committee chairman Brian Coombes is campaigning for the new law with the help of Weston MP John Penrose.Mr Coombes said: "Last year at the annual November carnival I asked a couple how much they had spent on the toys they had and they said £25. "I asked if they could donate anything to the carnival and they said they had no money left."With that happening every year our takings are severely depleted."Weston Town Council's policy and resources committee also backed the campaign at a meeting on Monday, saying peddlers 'bring the carnival into disrepute'.Cllr Mark Canniford said: "Dodgy dealers walking around the streets selling toys that break after a few hours are emptying the buckets of genuine carnival collectors."There is an appalling amount of people trying to sell these goods which, if it was from a shop, would be closed down by trading standards."Cllr Mike Kellaway-Marriott said: "Carnival peddlers in particular don't sell items fit for any purpose. They could be dangerous to our children and it brings the carnival into disrepute."If North Somerset Council also backs the change in the law, the private bill will be put before parliament before November 27.Mr Penrose said: "The town as a whole needs to back the idea and then the bill can be put before both houses of parliament."It will take some time to work its way through the process but then will become an official act, called something like the North Somerset Peddlers Act.
