TRADERS in one of the oldest parts of Clevedon are campaigning to have Hill Road designated as a Victorian shopping area.The Hill Road Traders Association is to apply to the Victorian Society in a bid to secure Victorian status for the area.The move would allow the group to install brown tourism signs directing people visiting the town to Hill Road Hill Road Traders Association chairman Bob Hughes said: "We will be making an application to the Victorian Society for the special status shortly."If the area is designated as Victorian it will give us a real focus to the road."It will also mean we can install some brown signs around the town to promote Hill Road as a real tourist area."People do enjoy coming to Hill Road and it is a popular shopping area but like everywhere, we need to increase footfall."Mr Hughes said he hoped to put signs up near the motorway, directing people to the shops.He added: "We had some signs put up around eight years ago which cost us around £600."I did a report on the existing signage earlier this year which shows we need to increase what we have."Other businesses in the town, such as the craft centre, have a number of prominent signs, some directing people from the motorway."We also need to look at getting signs by the motorway and along the seafront directing visitors to our shops."Mr Hughes added that he was hoping to get the backing of North Somerset's Blue Skies tourism group for the signage project. Portishead Tourism Group has also applied to the Victorian Society for the special status in the town's High Street.
