Residents are urged to band together to fight against the closure of their library.

A public meeting will be held in Highbridge to form a campaign group to battle against Somerset County Council’s plans to shut down the town’s library.

Dave Chapple, the secretary for Bridgwater Trades Union Council which covers Burnham and Highbridge, said: “It is vital this campaign is as broadly-based as possible. The sponsors of the meeting want everyone in Highbridge who cares about their library service, regardless of political affiliation, to come and take part.”

The council announced it would hold a consultation to look at cost-cutting measures in its library services.

Highbridge Library will either close and a mobile library opened or volunteers would need to step up and help out.

The meeting will be held tomorrow (Thursday) at 7.30pm at the Highbridge Social Club in Church Street.
