Traditional fun at village wassail

A MUG of steaming spiced cider was handed round, and a shotgun fired as Blagdon celebrated its annual wassail.
Saturday’s event, based on the ancient Somerset tradition, was held to bless the village’s orchards in order to bring a bumper crop of apples this year.
Dozens of villagers were entertained by the Somerset Morris ladies outside the New Inn before this year’s apple queen was crowned, before they proceeded to the orchard.
An invocation was called by the crowd, before the ceremony was completed as a shotgun was fired through the branches of an apple tree, and the wassail mug was handed round.
