Drivers are having to take life-endagering risks due to high speeds in Yatton High Street, according to campaigners.

With large housing developments being built at North End – and hundreds of other homes in the pipeline – concerns have been raised over how busy the roads are getting in the village.

Speedwatch volunteers get out into Yatton and Claverham several times a month, and while they clock how fast motorists are travelling, they also record data about how many vehicles are on the move.

Jean Stevenson told Yatton PACT twice in the past few weeks 1,000 cars an hour were heading through the village – once during school pick-up time and the other on a Saturday morning.

She said it was ‘quite alarming’, when the average used to be 800 vehicles per hour.

She also called on drivers to slow down for a mini-roundabout in the High Street, saying because they fail to slow properly, motorists turning out of Grange Farm Road and Wemberham Lane are put at peril.

Jean said: “Drivers are completely taking their lives into their own hands (turning out of those roads).”
