New traffic lights have been turned on at a major roundabout heading in and out of Weston-super-Mare.

The West Wick roundabout near junction 21 of the M5 and Morrisons supermarket has been subject to roadworks since the end of February.

As part of a £1million transport project, a third lane added to the roundabout in an attempt by North Somerset Council to increase capacity.

It is hoped that the work will reduce the queues often experienced at rush-hour.

The cones were removed earlier in the month ahead of the Weston Air Festival, however work has been continuing to allow the traffic lights to be switched on today (Tuesday).

A council spokesman said: “We’ve switched on the West Wick roundabout traffic lights.

“They’ll take a little while to adjust to the traffic flows.

“Thank you for your patience.”
