Travellers block off a showroom entrance

A GROUP of travellers moved into a Weston business’ car park at the weekend, blocking its main entrance and threatening an employee, a member of staff said.

Three caravans of Irish travellers parked up by Westwave Bathrooms in Oldmixon Crescent on Saturday, with one parked across the showroom’s entrance, and seemed to want to be paid to leave, according to a director at the company.

Richard Harris said he visited the site on Monday, which was closed due to the bank holiday, and asked the travellers how long they planned to stay.

He said: “It was a shock when I saw them.

“I asked quite pleasantly how long they would stay, but he told me they needed money to get back to Ireland.

“He asked to go somewhere private and I had the feeling he was about to get a little aggressive.

“I felt threatened and uncomfortable because my 12-year-old son was watching from the car.

“I went to the car and one of them came round to my side and one went round to my son’s side.

“As I pulled off, one of them raised his arm on my son’s side, so I swerved, and I called the police as soon as I was up the road.”

The travellers were gone by the time the business opened up again on Tuesday.

Mr Harris said he felt relieved the group had gone because they could have disrupted the business and put off potential customers.

He also said the group made a mess of the firm’s car park, leaving rubbish and excrement strewn at the site.

He was keen to stress the business had not been affected by the surprise one-off visit and is trading as normal.
