A FORMER illegal travellers' camp in Yatton is to be transformed into a nature reserve.Yatton and Congresbury Wildlife Action Group (YACWAG) has bought the former camp at Kenn Moor Road from a family of travellers who set up home there two years ago without permission. The travelling families did apply for planning consent to use the two fields - a site of special scientific interest - as a camp, but the move was refused by planners and enforcement action launched. They were ordered to move off the site, which lies in the green belt, last August.YACWAG chairperson Tony Moulin said: "We are delighted to have been able to buy two further fields on the outskirts of Yatton for a nature reserve. "We are grateful to Yatton Residents Group for their help with funding the purchase. "It seems appropriate to have completed the purchase at Christmas, bringing peace and goodwill to all three parties involved - the local residents, the sellers and ourselves. "We look forward to seeing what we can do to improve biodiversity on the site, and will be working closely with Natural England (formerly English Nature) and North Somerset Council".The new nature reserve will be known as Kenn Moor Nature Reserve. Like YACWAG's other nature reserves on Congresbury Moor, off Stowey Road, and at Littlewood on Claverham Drove, public access will be limited to guided walks and open days to minimise disturbance to wildlife.
