TRAVELLERS who set up an illegal camp in a play area in Wraxall have turned the land into a no go area for residents. The group of around 14 caravans moved off the site on Monday afternoon after making it their home for 10 days. But the travellers have left a trail of mess and destruction behind them, with piles of wood and tree brash and human faeces and toilet paper strewn across the grass and children's play area.Bags of rubbish have also been dumped on the land, fences broken and trees damaged.North Somerset Council site sent a team to the site yesterday (Tues) to clean up the land so residents can use it again. One resident, who did not want to be named, said: "We come up to the park a lot with the children and it is a very well used area by people living in The Elms."It has been left in a disgusting state with human faeces and toilet paper not only all over the field and play park but also in the other paths and accesses."At the moment it is a real health hazard."We cannot wait until it is cleaned up and we can use it again properly."Youngsters Annie, aged 10, and Archie, aged seven, said they had not been able to play on the park since the travellers arrived.Annie said: "There is poo all over the swings and the slides and we cannot use them."We did try and come and play but we got chased away by the travellers."It is very sad they have broken the trees and caused damage to our play area."Residents are now calling for better security measures at entrances to the park to prevent further encampments.North Somerset Council spokesman Zoe Briffitt said council staff visited the site yesterday (Tues) to clean up.
