The number of travellers who are settling in Burnham can only be addressed with a ‘lasting solution’, according to the town centre manager.

Pier Street car park is one of the most popular choices for travellers to settle and Sedgemoor District Council issued a group with court proceedings earlier this week.

This prompted the group, which consisted of eight vans and motor homes as well as a number of horseboxes, to move on.

However, this has become a regular occurrence throughout the summer with groups descending on the seafront, as well as at the town’s sports ground in Old Stoddens Road. A further group has also set up camp nearby in Berrow.

Town centre manager Beverley Milner Simonds told the Mercury: “Burnham is not alone in struggling to balance the needs of gypsies and travellers and those of residents in more conventional homes.

“I hope that my colleagues at the district council can assist us in finding a lasting solution that works for everyone.”
