TREE maintenance will take place in Herluin Way in Weston.

North Somerset Council will be carrying out the work on Thursday and Friday at the same time as an annual weeding and grass cutting programme.

The trees were deliberately planted too closely together in 1998 in case some of the young trees died, and to make sure individual trees would grow as straight and upright as possible.

Now the council is removing every other tree in the line to allow the remaining trees to grow.

The remaining trees will also be pruned to allow for clearance over the highway.

Cllr Peter Bryant said: “This work is essential so that the trees have as long a future as possible, and can be a local landmark for many years to come. The trees that stay will be able to thrive in the new space we are giving them.

“We’ve thought about the motorist too, and so by carrying out the work in the same week as we cut the grass verges, we’ve kept the need for road cones to an absolute minimum.”
