TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular and well-known pillar of a village community who has died.Kath Bridges, who lived off Station Road in Sandford for 45 years, died on June 15 after a short illness. Community correspondent and long-time friend, Gareth Jones, shares his memories of a much-loved lady.He writes: 'Kath was well known for her involvement in the many aspects of village life - fetes, harvest home, Women's Institute, hospital transport, the Conservative Association and music groups. She was a staunch member of the church of which she was a church warden for several years. Kath was a lady who behind her gentle exterior hid a very strong character. She steadfastly believed that life was for living and certainly practised what she preached.Married to Vivian in 1944, she spent the earlier part of her life living in various RAF postings at home and abroad while bringing up her four children, Michael, Steven, David and Sue. Viv died suddenly in 1980. Although devastated by her loss Kath continued to accept and take on many more challenges in her life including a round the world trip in her 70s and buying a new car in her 80s exclaiming "It went like a bomb".Her family was a great delight to her and in spite of failing health she attended her granddaughter Laura's wedding in May of this year decked out in a super new outfit for the special day. Her wardrobe was another of Kath's loves. Kath lived life to the full. She experienced tragedy, wonderful love, endless laughter, friendship and a strong faith. She was steadfast in her beliefs, values, honesty and integrity. Upon her death she left a letter for her family stating 'I have left you but I am now with your dad, which is where I have wanted to be for many years. Live your lives in a Christian way and look after each other'.'Kath was a remarkable woman, a joy to know and an inspiration to us all. The funeral service will take place at All Saints Church, Sandford on June 29 at 2pm.There will be no flowers but donations for All Saints Church may be made via Gower Funeral Directors, The Square, Winscombe.
