WESTON residents have spoken out in their numbers online about the Tropicana in the wake of the decision to approve its demolition.

Readers have taken to the Mercury’s website and Facebook page in their droves to have their say on the news.

Many expressed anger at North Somerset Council over what has happened to the building, while others welcomed the Secretary of State’s decision.

■ Helena Chase said: “Fiasco from start to finish. Yes it’s an eyesore on the seafront because of the long history of failure caused by would-be developers being stonewalled by the council at every turn.

“All we have ever wanted was a pool with a retractable roof so it has year-long usage, it’s not exactly rocket science.”

■ Mike Walton said: “We all seem to be missing the point and fighting amongst ourselves over this one issue when surely we should all be standing united together and getting rid of the brainless, egotistical, moronic administration that currently sits in power at its plush air-conditioned offices in Clevedon.

“It is responsible for this and all other braindead decisions it has made that are slowly killing our town.”

■ Louise Thompson said: “With the money this council has wasted in the years it’s been derelict and rejecting or debating everything they could have had the money to put a retractable roof on the pool.”

■ Colsey said: “What a shame that with all the recent news of the success of Team GB that the council still wants to demolish what could potentially be a sporting facility for the area.

“Also the death of another great tourist attraction.

“I believe that the council does not want to attract tourists to Weston.”

■ Gemma Nickels Rivers said: “What a joke! I’d spent many summers there and have amazing memories! And was always hoping that my kids would in future, sad news.”

But others supported the Secretary of State’s decision.

■ Jim said: “Surely there’s no basis for any further legal challenge.

“When a judicial review is thrown out and the secretary of state approves its demolition I think you’re out of options.”

■ Rob Cooper said: “At the end of the day it’s an eyesore the sooner its gone the better.”

■ T-Bone said: “Be it the right decision or wrong... just pull the place down and stop wasting any more money on appeals etc.

“People soon moan there’s no money for vital services but still want pursue this unrealistic dream at our expense.

“Give it a rest... there’s roads that need repairing and youth centres to try and support.”
