A LOTTERY bid to regenerate Birnbeck Pier in Weston will go ahead despite its recent sale. The Birnbeck Regeneration Trust is planning to go ahead with its plan to apply for more than £20million in lottery funds in case new owners Urban Splash fail to redevelop the historic site. The trust plans to employ a project manager, to be paid £25-30,000 pro rata, to take forward its bid.Trust chairman Charles McCann said: "We met with representatives from Urban Splash and were impressed by their presentation."We hope the company will bring about an end we are all striving for. But if everything goes pear shaped and Urban Splash doesn't produce the goods, we'll be back to square one."We've got to apply for lottery funding. We've got to try something or the pier will fall into the sea."We need to make an application soon because otherwise the London Olympics will suck it all up."He said that past plans to get a compulsory purchase order to seize the site for redevelopment are on hold.
