TWO men have been arrested following a blaze which gutted a derelict Highbridge hotel on Monday.

Fire crews were called to the Highbridge Hotel in Huntspill Road shortly before 5pm, with three crews tackling the fire for more than three hours.

The hotel, which had been closed since another large fire in 2008, was severely damaged, with one floor and the roof almost completely destroyed.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire Service told the Mercury that at one point more than a third of the building was consumed by the fire.

The A38 through the town was closed for much of Monday evening due to the smoke blowing over from the blaze.

Police later arrested two men, both aged 19, on suspicion of arson with intent. They were held overnight, but were released on bail on Tuesday pending further police enquiries.
