STAFF at the job centre and social security office in Weston joined a national strike over job cuts.About 20 Public and Commercial Services Union staff at Jobcentre Plus in High Street went on strike on Tuesday and Wednesday. Staff at the social security office in Union Street also joined the protest over the Government's plans to cut 30,000 jobs in the Department of Work and Pensions by 2008.A small picket formed outside the job centre in support of the protest.The job cuts have hit home in Weston with the social security office in Union Street to close by the end of June.The number of staff at the social security office has dropped by over a half over the past year. Several staff have left the office and not been replaced and a number have moved to the job centre. There have been no voluntary redundancies.Union representative Richard Capps said: "They are trying to find space for about 20 of the remaining staff at the job centre and the others could go to South Bristol. But it's not clear how it will pan out. "A lot more people have gone on strike in Weston than usual. It's probably because the job cuts are biting hard now.
