TWO primary schools could amalgamate next year to provide facilities for up to 420 pupils.North Somerset Council is proposing to join Milton infant and junior schools. If the plans get the go-ahead the local authority will close both schools on August 31, 2007, and reopen a new one on the existing sites in Milton Park Road, the next day.North Somerset Council is currently asking members of the public to come forward and have their say on whether the changes should take place. The results of the consultation will be analysed at the end of December and the council will decide whether to proceed to the formal stage of the proposals in January.A North Somerset spokesman said: "We have a legal duty to ensure the efficient use of resources in relation to the provision of school places."Whilst doing nothing or maintaining the status quo might be an option there are good educational reasons for a review of the organisational set up for both schools."The final decision on whether the school can be reorganised would be made by an independent School Organisation Committee, which will consider the case made by the council and representations made by the public. If the committee is unable to make a decision the case will go to the schools' adjudicator, an independent figure appointed by the government.
