Dozens fewer people were unemployed in North Somerset in August than in July, new figures reveal.

The Department for Work and Pensions has released unemployment figures for August which show there were 1,320 people without jobs living in the district, compared to 1,225 in July.

The figures show an eight per cent drop in unemployment compared to August 2016, and a 67 per cent reduction in the past decade.

Weston Jobcentre manager Sally Forrest said the centre is helping people improve their digital skills as they start claiming Universal Credit (UC), which is replacing six different benefits, including jobseekers’ allowance, with one monthly payment which people manage online.

Ms Forrest also said the centre is also preparing for John Penrose’s jobs fair on Wednesday, and added: “We will have a stand to promote working in the civil service and to support claimants attending the fair.”
