Bomb disposal teams were called to Weston-super-Mare’s Birnbeck Pier yesterday after archaeologists found what is believed to be a historic unexploded detonator at the site.
The cylindrical object was found yesterday (Monday) and was photographed by the Birnbeck Regeneration Trust’s Neil O’Donoghue, who then sent the image to police.
Mr O’Donoghue said: “Concerned that it could well be a danger to the public, the police in turn contacted the Royal Logistics Corps, who sent a unit to attend the site.
“After examination, including x-rays the object was deemed safe for removal and was taken away for specialist disposal.”
