A UNION concerned about the potential sale of Weston General Hospital is launching a campaign to save it from ‘privatisation’.
In May, the Mercury reported the hospital had effectively been put up for sale as its worsening financial situation was set to leave it with a multi-million pound shortfall each year.
Weston Area Health Trust (WAHT) began seeking external investment in November, after concluding it was not big enough to convert into a large foundation trust hospital as required by the Department of Health’s NHS reforms.
A family friendly event is being held by Unison South West on June 29 where people can find out more about the campaign.
It is aimed at anyone concerned about the hospital being run by a private company and worried about how the sale may affect patient care.
Unison’s event will be held on June 29 from 10am-2pm at Weston Football Club in Winterstoke Road.
The main speaker will be Joanne Kaye, regional secretary for Unison South West, along with other unconfirmed guests.
Refreshments and games for children will be available.
