The idea was thought up by Beverley Lister, owner of Uphill Village Stores, who wanted a novel way to mark the shop’s 80th anniversary.

Among the many awards given out included ones for helping elderly neighbours and handing in someone’s missing cash. Some of the awards were handed out by Weston Hospicecare’s new chief executive Gill Young.

Mrs Lister said: “We celebrated people who have dedicated decade of their lives to the village, to the pupils at Uphill Primary School who took part in our drawing competition.

“Everyone was so happy and warm, it was just wonderful. We’re going to see if we can do another day like this.”
