MINDLESS vandals caused hundreds of pounds worth of damage in Portishead High Street over the festive period.

Hanging baskets outside NatWest bank were ruined, poles holding the Christmas lights were shaken until bulbs crashed to the ground and the glass panel in the door of McColl's newsagent was smashed.

Residents have said they are concerned about the rise of vandalism and graffiti in the town in recent months, however, the police have assured the public it is only a small number of people causing the problems.

PC Colin Lias said: "At this time of year there is always a minority that over step the mark but this is in no way a reflection of the general behaviour in Portishead."

The police have said tackling antisocial behaviour in the town is one of their priorities for 2010.
