EIGHT fire crews are tackling a 'severe' blaze on Weston-super-Mare seafront this evening (Tuesday), with firefighters checking to see if anyone is trapped inside.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 4.51pm and rushed to the scene of the fire, which broke out in a second floor flat in Beach Road.

The fire has now spread to the third floor and crews remain on the scene.

Firefighters are using turntable ladders to try to access the top of the building, so they can douse the flames from above.

The roof appears to have caved in and flames are visible as the crews battle for control.

Smoke continues to billow from the building, near Princess Royal Square and Tutto restaurant.

Paramedics and police are currently on the scene too.

People in nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution.

A safety cordon is in place to stop the public getting too close to the buildings on fire, although dozens are sitting and watching the fire as it unfolds.

A fire service spokesman said: “Firefighters remain on the scene of the incident. The fire is affecting a building with a commercial premise on the ground floor and flats above.

“Crews are currently conducting a thorough search of the building to determine if anyone is inside.

“The seafront is still open but there is congestion in the area and a cordon is in place.”

Police have shut Regent Street while emergency services continue to deal with the incident.
