A CARAVANNING club has decided not to set up camp in Hutton after a mass protest by villagers, the parish council and North Somerset Council. The Camping and Caravanning Club has holiday sites for members all over the country and the national club was keen to add Hutton to its list of destinations. The club does not have to apply for planning permission to start up a new site as it is considered a responsible organisation which listens to the views of local people. And after scores of protesters turned up to Hutton Parish Council meeting to ask councillors to appeal against the site it seems the voice of the people was heard.Parish council clerk Andrew Basterfield said: "I had an email from the club as a result of representations made and they said they will not be pursuing the application. I think it was because of the groundswell of opposition, without question. The parish council didn't support the application and North Somerset Council wrote a very strong letter to the club opposing it."Villagers were concerned that the planned site, just off Church Lane, would have been impractical due to the narrow access road and congestion on the already busy lane. The club also has holiday spots in Bleadon, Banwell and Locking and was hoping to set up camp on an AONB site in Hutton.Tina Steele, exempted camping manager from the club, said: "At the Camping and Caravanning Club we take into consideration a number of factors when deciding whether to take forward an application for a new site. In this particular instance we were advised by the Local Authority and the community that the road infrastructure was unsuitable for a campsite, even as small as this one would be. The Club takes its social responsibility very seriously and therefore decided on this occasion that the site was not suitable to proceed with.
