ROAD surfacing work which caused mayhem in Banwell earlier this year will have to be redone in January because faulty materials were used.West Street in Banwell will be closed from January 3-4 while workmen replace faulty road surfacing, which was supplied to contractor Ringway.Cllr John Crockford-Hawley, North Somerset Council's executive member for strategic planning and transport, said: "This is absolutely no reflection on the council. In fact, it was our own engineers who spotted the problem and immediately alerted the contractors."As the contractors were supplied with faulty materials all costs fall to them. We have stressed to them our exasperation over this and the unnecessary inconvenience this will cause."The A371 will be closed from the car park on West Street up to the junction with Castle Hill. Shops will be open as normal, the car park will be in use and Ringway will be contacting any affected businesses and school transport operators in the run up to the closure. The work was originally carried out over eight weeks in March while new drains were installed from Castle Hill to West Street car park. West Street and Castle Hill were also resurfaced and the roadworks left the centre of Banwell off limits for drivers and commuters.
