WEDMORE could soon have a post office again after Sedgemoor District Council granted planning permission last Wednesday. The premises at 12 The Borough, will be changed from a garage into a 43 m sq Royal Mail sorting office, complete with a roadside post box. The former village post office in Church Street closed on March 30 after the postmaster announced his retirement. The new post office will be a mere 500 metres from the old site. Post office officials hope building work will start as soon as possible in order to get a Wedmore post office up and running by the summer. When the post office shut, emergency measures had to be taken and a temporary delivery centre for the village was set up in Blackford Village Hall. Postal workers have to travel to the neighbouring village to collect letters for delivery from the hall. However, members of the public in Wedmore who want to collect parcels or use other post office services have to travel to Axbridge Post Office in St Marys Street.Until the post office opens, this service will continue. Royal Mail spokesman Jane Thomas said: "As planning permission has been granted we will now consider purchasing the building. This is definitely good news for Wedmore.
