A NORTH Somerset village charity has been awarded National Lottery funding as it aims to stage a special Olympic-themed event this year.
Churchill Music!, which works with singers of all ages, is embarking on an ambitious project that will celebrate the massive sporting occasion in a novel way.
Trustee Jan Murray said the undisclosed amount would help put on a spectacular night at the school academy hall on July 8. A second performance will take place in St George’s Bristol.
She said: “It has long been a passion of Churchill Music! to try to reach out to new audiences and music makers and what better way to accomplish this than to create a link between sport and music during the Olympic year through commissioning an innovative choral work to be performed by mixed choirs.
“The Olympic and Paralympic values, are terrific and universal, so why not get everyone singing about them and audiences listening to them?”
The piece will be composed by former BBC Young Composer of the Year, Thomas Hewitt-Jones, with lyrics by the poet and broadcaster, Matt Harvey.
