RODENTS have been seen scampering around near a supermarket in Yatton, it has been claimed.Villagers had reported seeing rats at the back of Somerfield in the precinct, Councillor Jane Bollen told the parish council at a meeting on Monday.Cllr Bollen said she had been approached by residents who had reported seeing the vermin eating out-of-date food in cages behind the supermarket after it had shut.A Somerfield spokesman said: "We have spoken to the store manager and he says as far as he knows there is no problem with the back of the store. A monthly test is carried out by a pest control company and the last one came back negative. We have had the pest control company out again today and that report is also clear."The manager believes there is some grain and food left in a garage about 40ft away from Somerfield which belongs to a shop that was shut some time ago in Yatton, which could be the problem. We do not leave food in cages because it can attract this kind of problem with rats."Worried villagers wrote to North Somerset Council chiefs last year to demand that they take action to remove the rats which they said had been seen in Somerfield car park and on school playing fields.
