VILLAGERS in Blagdon delved into ancient Somerset folklore at the annual wassail on Saturday.

The event, which echoes the centuries-old tradition of blessing apple orchards, was kicked off by Morris dancing at the New Inn.

After this year’s Apple Queen was chosen from the assembled villagers, the event moved to Eldred’s Orchard, where a piece of cider-soaked toast was placed in the oldest tree.

Cider was poured around its roots and the orchard was blessed, before the assembled wassailers enjoyed mugs of hot spiced cider.
