CHURCHILL Parish Council is to conduct a poll over the next month to let villagers have a say on where affordable homes should be built. It has already met with North Somerset Council planning officers who have whittled down 10 possible sites in the village to just two. However, at a meeting on Monday (Feb 12), concerns were raised that the only reason the scheme is being allowed to go ahead is because housing for those on low incomes is not subject to the same planning restraints as private developments. The two suitable sites identified by local authority planning officers for the 10 low cost houses are in Pudding Pie Lane and Ladymead Lane.North Somerset councillor Ann Harley said: "The people of Churchill are not opposed to affordable housing, but they feel the site at Pudding Pie Lane would not be in character with the surrounding area."Parish clerk Lindsay Ireland said: "Residents on the Broadoak estate would have their view of open fields spoilt by any development opposite." A formal planning application is yet to be received by North Somerset Council, which will have the final say on any planning decision in the village. The results of the written poll, which is being sent to roughly 2,300 people, will be counted before the next parish council meeting in March.Developers will bring "dummy plans" to the meeting so residents will be able to judge for themselves the impact of the proposed development.
