DANGEROUS debris, litter and excessive signs are keeping visitors away from Uphill beach, according to a village watchdog.Uphill Village Society chairman Stewart Castle claims one of the area's most popular tourist attractions is losing out because North Somerset Council is spending more time and money on Weston beach.Mr Castle said: "We appreciate that from time to time, with the high tide, an awful lot of waste is brought in but it doesn't often get cleaned until we've done lots of shouting and complaining about it."When the council removed the decking from the entrance to the beach, all the wood was piled in the dunes and it has never been cleared. It's dangerous and unsightly."Over the last few months more signs and posts have been put up, making it look more like the Normandy landing beach than an area to attract families."A North Somerset Council spokesman said: "Weston beach is cleaned daily with a machine which goes up and down the beach. Uphill is cleaned once a week because it's not used as much. The priority zone is the main Weston beach as that's where a lot of the tourists go."But Mr Castle believes something should be done because it is spoiling a beauty spot for the people who live nearby. He said: "I think it must keep people away. I certainly don't feel it attracts anybody and for residents who use it, maybe daily, it's no longer a pleasurable experience. We would like someone from the council to come down and and meet with us and then take some positive steps to clean away the rubbish and sort out a constructive programme of maintenance for it. The council ought to be more proud of the area and encourage people to come and visit.
