Weston Museum’s growth after its £1.6million revamp has prompted a call for more volunteers.

Museum staff are looking to recruit more engagement volunteers who play a key role in ensuring the facilitation of the exhibitions at the Burlington Street venue.

The volunteers help to monitor exhibits and collect valuable feedback from guests to help the management team at the museum design and curate future exhibitions.

But visitor services manager, Matt Hardy, said the most important role of their volunteers is to ‘help us tell the story of Weston’ and to ‘enhance our visitors experience’.

Chairman of the Museum and Heritage sub-commitee, Cllr John Crockford-Hawley, said the museum ‘would not function’ without helpers.

He added: “With an ever-increasing number of events and exhibitions, we need more help, especially when it comes to managing the display of national treasures such as the current Alfred Leete art on loan until January from the Imperial War Museum.

“Volunteering can be very rewarding and fun. You get to meet fascinating people, spend time bathed in history and gain the satisfaction of doing something really worthwhile.

“To paraphrase the Kitchener poster ‘your museum needs you’.”

Mr Hardy said: “Now we have such an amazing building, with thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund and Weston Town Council, we can do that better than ever before.

“However we cannot do it alone. Our engagement volunteers are integral to enhancing the visitor experience and developing our exhibition programme.

“Without them we could not have been able to secure the loan of the original artwork from the Imperial War Museum – with the support of ArtFund – for our current Alfred Leete: The Man Behind The Icon exhibition.

“There is so much more planned for the museum and we could not do it without our engagement volunteers.”

The museum underwent a £1.6million refurbishment which included a life and new galleries and exhibition spaces.

A taster morning will be held at the museum from 10.30am-12.30pm on Monday or email lisa.clemons@wsm-tc.gov.uk for more details.
