"IT IS amazing just to sit on the Tropicana steps again and see it being used."

These are the words of Weston-super-Mare resident Bridie Collier, who was one of the lucky people who managed to get a locals-only ticket to Banksy’s Dismaland exhibition today (Friday).

Bridie was one of 1,000 people who queued up outside the Tropicana to get their hands on a wristband through this week’s edition of the Mercury, with some people pitching up tents on the beach at 9pm last night (Thursday) to make sure they were one of the 1,000.

The local ticket day was Banksy’s own idea and the reaction to the exhibit from people inside was overwhelmingly positive.

Chris Fox, who lives in Ellenborough Park South, visited the exhibit with Anne Stokes. He said: “It is just really interesting. I had seen the previews so I had an idea of what to expect – and I am not disappointed.

“I love the fact they can get across different views and works, and I am not at all offended.”

Sam Webb and Tina Langston meanwhile praised Banksy for bringing the Trop to ‘life’ and called it an ‘opportunity not to be missed’.

They said: “It has taken Banksy to actually make something happen on the site. It has been a wasted resource and it has been sad to see its decline.

“Thankfully he has the clout and the gall to do something like this. The ferris wheel was hilarious and the staff are so fabulously grumpy.”

Dismaland will also host a number of musical events and Massive Attack have already been confirmed, to be headlining on September 25 alongside Kate Tempest and Pussy Riot.
