Hundreds raised for church through open gardens event

An open gardens event raised almost £1,000 for a community church.

The Friends of Weare Church hosted the fundraiser to raise money for St Gregory’s Church, in Sparrow Hill.

The group helps with the preservation, maintenance and repairs of the Grade-I listed building, which has become very expensive to maintain.

The event raised just under £950 for the charity’s continued efforts at the local landmark.

Five gardens around Weare opened their gates for visitors to explore and enjoy.

Charity chairman Steve Mercer said: “Once again the sun shone brightly on us, teas and cakes remained as popular as ever and bargains were available from our plant stall.”

Over the years, the charity has donated funds to replace an oil tank and a new heating system.

Mr Mercer said: “We know further repairs will be needed over time and, like all old buildings, they are ongoing and often expensive.”
