THE inclement weather has delayed the completion of the £3.9million revamp of a prime seafront area.

North Somerset Council contractors started work on Pier Square in Weston in February and the finishing touches were expected to be made to the site in October.

The area, stretching from Salisbury Terrace to Carlton Street and from the promenade to the junctions of Oxford Street and Regent Street, has a new pedestrian section with granite paving.

Last month the council revealed how the project had suffered several setbacks and now the snow and ice of the past couple of weeks has put the project back further.

A daily penalty for late completion by the contractor of £750 per day has been in place since early October.

Work was still continuing on the on the motorcycle park and other areas where below freezing temperatures were not an issue, until the heavy snowfall.

Council highways chief, Councillor Elfan Ap Rees, says contractors will continue with the project as soon as possible.
